Tool CREATE DATUM in CATIA V5

Create datum – do you know how to use it?

Tool CREATE DATUM allows you to create geometry without history (“corpse”). Created element has no parent (Parents), is not linked to anything and is not even possible to edit it in any way. It is true that geometry without history we can create also in other ways, but in every way that’s the designer’s preference. Therefore I will show you ways:

1. The geometry can be created with the history and subsequently use “deaden” command Isolate. Then, you can find it in the menu by right-clicking the mouse on the element. Command Isolate isolates links to parents (no children). In the picture below you can see the history of the created geometry, and subsequently geometry without history.

2. If you already have created geometry, then you can Copy and paste it via Paste Special (as result). Embedded geometry has no history, same as with command Isolate. This can be managed in the part itself, or in the Assembly between parts (Copy geometry from Part1, switch to Part2 and Paste geometry)

3. If you use the tool CREATE DATUM, geometry you create is without  history as a “corpse” (without Parents). You can do it in the part itself, or in the Assembly between parts. I will show you the possibility to select axis of the console holes that can be used as a reference for the holes in the panel (if for any reason you do not want to have a link between consoles and panels). Same way, you can select faces, edges, and so on.
Be carefull to use CREATE DATUM and remember to turn it off after selection (double click when activated for multi selection). Then you will have just a heap of the corpses without history…
